A vegan living in Germany? |
I used to live in Germany and I'm moving back this summer. When I lived there years ago, I was a vegetarian. Being a vegetarian in Germany was tough but it wasn't too bad. I'm vegan now and I'm wondering what vegan German food you recommend.
Also, do you know of any animal rights groups in southern Germany? |

I hope you can read german. Here is a site for vegans in Germany, with forums and shopping, restaurant info.
http://www.vegan.de/
And here is a site for animal rights. Just click on the region you need to find a group in your area:

Don't worry, a lot has changed for vegans and vegetarians in Germany. There is a lot more variety now than there was -say, ten years ago. Not necessarily in the discounter supermarkets, but in the normal supermarkets. And there are more specialty shops who mark the products suitable for vegans, as well.
AS for vegan food I'd recommend: I am not a vegan or a vegetarian right now, and haven't been for some years now, and I don't know your preferences, but for a sweet main dish, I'd go for a "Dampfnudel" (steamed yeast dough Knödel) with steamed fruit. How about a roast potato salad, or a pumpkin-potato-leek stew?
I'm sorry, I have not been on the lookout for animal rights groups, so I can't help you there, but you might want to contact the local animal shelter when you are here. They usually have a list of the local clubs.
Well, anyway, welcome back to Germany. I hope I helped you a little. |

Actually, ALDI is selling a range of products in the chilled cabinet which might be vegan. But they are selling tofu and it's quite good.
REAL supermarket has a good range of products like veggie sausages and I think they are vegan (and they are good value too). The Reformhaus (health shop) has lots of stuff but it's a bit more pricey.
Eating out as a vegan won't be easy but you can still eat Italian (cheap and good in Germany). Some of the pastas and salads don't have animal products. |

That surprises me. There are a lot of granola types in Germany. I wouldn't think it hard to go vegan there at all. |
