If your mother was German, but you were born in the US while she lived there, you are a US American. If she was not German anymore, you are not German. Even if she was German, but living permanently in the states and you were born in the states, you only had dual citizenship until 18 or 21. You do not have the German citizenship automatically. You have very good chances of getting it, as you are a direct descendant of a German citizen, but you are not a German citizen right now, I guess.

Germany does not allow dual citizenship by choice, so if your Mom had a US passport, I guess she renounced her citizenship.

Germany, and many other European countries, do not define citizenship by place of birth, but always by blood line. It does not matter where you are born! As long as both parents are German by actual citizenship, the child is German. Up until it is an adult, Germany tolerates dual citizenship, but usually by the age of 18 the child will have to decide which citizenship it wants to have.

YES you have a right to get a German Passport if your mom has not given up her german citizen ship. And even if she had done so.You are at least half german and this will not change even if you live in a different country.
Get in touch with the German Embassy closest to you and they will be able to answer all your questions.
Good Luck

If your dad was american and you were born here then you are american...If you were born here and both your parents were born in germany and hadnt become american citizens then you have dual citizenship

If your mother was a german citizen and you have no other citizenship --- you are german. If you claimed another citizenship (that means you must not have the citizenship of another state you only must have asked for !!!) you lost your German citizenship except you asked for allowance and got the allowace before you asked another state for citizenship.
(Beibehaltungsgenehmigung).

Germany recognizes citizenship by bloodline, the USA determines citizenship by birthplace, if you were born in the United States, you are a US citizen.

Pokegirl
If you were born in Germany, yes. If she was just pregnant with you in Germany, and you born in the USA, no.

It depends on where you were born. If you were born in Germany, then yes. If you were born in another country, then you are a citizen of that country.

What matters is where you were born, not her! IF you were born in Germany then you are a German citizen, if you were born in France then you are a French citizen, makes no difference where your Mom was born!
