Compared to the US, there is no crime in Germany. :-)
But, of course there is. Not as much, but you never know, what you step into.

The western part of Germany is used to Americans, as we had US Soldiers here ever since the war. So you can say, we are kind of "americanized". The eastern part of Germany was occupied by the east block, so they had no chance to adapt.

The average person on the streets will not be your problem especially not in daylight. But there are a few juveniles with Nazi ideas who would not be nice to meet, especially more than one. They are strong in groups, only. There are not many, but more in the eastern part of Germany.

But again, if you don't search for the ugly areas, I don't expect a problem for you and since I'm familiar with both countries and with the theme: There is less racism in Germany.

Sadly, such attacks happen, and before the World Cup, some politicians suggested coloured visitors should keep from visiting some parts of Eastern Germany. But frankly, I think you'll be fine if you do what a sensible traveller does anyway: Don't go into dodgy areas at night on your own. If you feel uncomfortable somewhere, leave. In all major cities, and in broad daylight, you'll be fine.

Hey ... I am German! You don't have to worry of getting attacked as a tourist! If you come here and visit the attractions nothing is gonna happen to you as long as you avoid the poorer parts of the cities!

Rath
Stick to the big cities and you'll be alright. German cities are such diverse places that you'll blend right in. If I had to avoid a specific area, I'd say eastern Germany would be it. Unfortunately, certain parts of Berlin are pretty bad as well. On the flip side, Frankfurt is the most diverse city in the country. Demographics-wise, it's more like New York than a typical German city. It's a great town.

Well, I'm German, from East Germany and my (ex-)husband is black and he has visitted me here several times and nothing ever happened to him.

Latin Techie
Neo nazis get everywhere and attack anyone who is not a German, there are lots of foreigners of all colours settled in Germany, it is a nice place so dont worry about being attcked. Check Out Sachsenhausen in Frankfurt if you like beer and sausages( together).
