Any tips for travel in Germany?

I am traveling to Germany with the foreign exchange student form August 2nd to the 20th. I will be traveling alone, and I was wondering if anyone had any tips for me while I'm in Germany. If it helps, I am 16 years old, and a female. Are there any places I should go to or avoid? Also, we'll be near Nordhausen and Erfurt.

Thanks Guys!!!!

I live in Germany myself -- and for most parts, Germany is a quite safe country, very safe - but, some bigger cities also has some bad areas (as elsewhere in the world). But, Erfurt is lovely and nice - but, I have never been to Nordhausen yet.

Again, Germany is a very safe country and I don't think that you should be scared nor afraid at all.

Enjoy your trip to Germany!

Greetings from Germany...

Nordhausen is a charming little town not far from Erfurt.

It is in an area that used to be East Germany, although it closely borders to the Western areas. It is in Thuringia and not too far away from Weimar.

I think you are very lucky, because I believe that Weimar is essentially Germany in a nutshell. If you got only 2 days to spent in Germany, you should IMO spent them in Weimar.

See what I wrote here ("Essential Germany"): http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/Europe/Germany/Land_Thueringen/Weimar-8848/General_Tips-Weimar-BR-1.html

Nordhausen is located in the tourist region of the Harz mountains, btw.

Nordhausen is connected to the main sights in the Harz area by a historical narrow gauge steam railway.

Eat a lot! I used to live in Bavaria and I miss the schnitzel mit pommes frites and the Ritter Sport and Kinder Egg chocolates. Unfortunately I haven't been near the cities you named so I don't have any area-specific tips. But, as you are likely to notice, the buildings in Germany, at least the places I have been, don wonderful architecture. Have a wonderful trip!!
