hostels are great i stayed i them when i went to Germany. The things about hostels are that there are different kinds of rooms you can stay in the more people in a room the less you pay if you want to pay more you can get a room to you self. I was traveling my my self and stayed in 4 person rooms they do not separate males and females most of the rooms i was in i was the only female but it was great every on was so friendly. I never had a problem. Most hostels have lockers that you put a deposit down on and are not very expensive. The people that work there can tell you the best places to go and see. If you are worried about it do a search and you can find lists of hostels and what the offer. If you are not traveling with kids don't stay in one that caters to families they have a lot of rules not much fun. I met a lot of really cool people i actually ended up traveling with someone i met at the bar in a hostel it was really great

A few of my friends have stayed in hostels while traveling, and the impression that they gave was that they are safe. However, they also complained about the lack of personal space and close sleeping arrangements, but like I said, nothing happened to them.

I have stayed in a number of hostels in Germany, France, and England. The German ones are very clean and tidy and orderly. The one in France (I did only go to one there, and it might just have been a bad example) was safe, but not really that clean. In England (Bristol, Oxford, and one other cant remember the town name) they were just normal, not dirty, not pristine.

They all had locked cabinets to keep things in over night, but I never occupied a room with strangers, so I don't know about that sort of safety, but I would think with the cabinets it would be just fine.
