We have 2 in Berlin, which are famous: Tachelles and one in Kreuzberg. I ran passed the latter and peeped over the fence. It is basically a lot where people live in these builder's sheds. Not sure if they are illegal, but wouldn't be surprised. Empty houses are sometimes disputed. Owners eg Jews, were forced out, then in the east, the government took away land, so people make claims all the time on property, which looks empty to us ordinary people.
