NOT in general they are not as in the USA in Shopping malls.

There you can find convenient store gas stations open and usually shops in the Train stations and Airports. Other than that MOST places except a few unique places are closed on Sunday. I believe it is the law. Even on Saturday things close early. They are not like us in the USA where we go shopping on the weekends esp teenagers!!

I have noted that shopping malls are becoming more and more popular there but I still do not think they are open on Sunday.

Normally not-only stores at airports or train-stations. And you may buy some articles at gas-stations.
Sometimes there are open sundays.

I'm here now as an American assigned to Germany. Unless you're asking if convienience stores or tourist shops are open, the answer is distinctly no. Department stores, shops and the like are closed on Sunday, much to our frustration. Like in previous posts, gas stations (with a small store) are open, and in tourist locations, the tourist shops are sometimes open on Sunday. Can you go shopping on Sunday? No, don't plan on it.

Generally no. Supermarkets are open on Saturdays until 8 p.m., in larger cities sometimes 10 p.m., and some stores open Sundays from 8 a.m. until noon or 2 p.m., but German law usually requires a special permission to open your shop on Sundays, which has to be paid for, and making things worse, there is no federal law about that, so each federal state, and even each community, can handle this just the way they like. The only federal law we have about this is the old "Ladenschlussgesetz" ("shop closing times law", roughly translated) which proscribes closing times on Saturdays and Sundays, but has been half-heartedly amended to allow each state some exceptions to the rule.

I have lived in Germany for over 20 years. I have adapted very nicely to NOT shopping on Sundays. I also happen to have bought a house with all the money I was able to save by not shopping so much.
But, the other answers have given you good tips on what stores/shops are open and where. Your best bet if you really need something is the main train station or airport located in or nearby the big cities.

In big cities like Berlin, more and more stores and malls are open on Sundays for several hours every once in a while - like on some Sundays before Christmas. And like mentioned, gas stations, airports, train stations have open shops, and also bakeries are open in the morning. Also there may be open air markets depending on the area. But better plan on shopping another day in general...

If you are in Berlin the big bahnhof is open and Fridrich strasse bahnhof is open and sudkreuz bahnhof is open if you are in other places the bahnhof should be open.

In Berlin we have a few Stores and Supermarkets open on Sunday. In the week and on Saturday they are opened till 10pm.

Shops usually are closed on Sundays. Exceptions are gas stations, (some) flower shops, (some) bakeries and touristy shops. I think every city is entitled to 2 open Sundays each year, but when they are is basically up to the city. Even in big cities like Cologne the regular shops are closed on Sundays.

No, stores are not open on Sundays (or Saturday afternoon). Some bakeries are open Sunday mornings til 11 a.m., gas stations, tourist traps, etc. I personally think this is good, at least here in Germany the family is still considered to be very important and having the stores closed means the family can spend at least one day a week to be together. I remember in Canada, stores where closed Sundays as well as Mondays or Wednesday afternoons...Late night shopping was for Xmas only. We still have a family atmosphere in Germany and we enjoy our Sundays for walks with the family, coffee and cake in the afternoon with parents, grandparents and children. Canada used to be like that at one time...now it's 24 hour 7 day a week shopping and working...is family still important or are the new generation (baby boomers +) or just obsessed with working, shopping and money.

in tourist areas like meersburg/lake constance or reperbahn/hamburg the shops are open on sunday.

Forget it. Everything is closed. I guess they think it is acceptable to deny their customers the opportunity to shop and losing money they could gain during another day of business. it is because of old-fashioned religious ideas. Hello??? Aren't you supposed to be secular???? Separation from church and state?? Also it's laziness. I have asked people why they don't open on Sundays and they say "because the workers need a break" Really, I say, it woulnd't be the same workers all the time.
In some parts of Germany they have 15% unemployment, don't you think more people could benefit from working on a Sunday. I think it would boost the economy, but they won't listen they don't adapt to change here well.

No, only small stores such as at the train station. Threre is also only a very few pharmacies open in each city which is designated outside of every pharmacy. Kinda boring on a Sunday not to have any supermarkets or other departments stores open as here in the US.

There are stores open on sundays, but not that many. Supermarkets are not, so it is best to buy what you need on Saturday.
