Hi Lear. YOU wrote it? I'm a German, and I was pretty much impressed on how far into details the English Wikipedia article on German cuisine goes. I keep recommending it to foreigners who just start enjoying German cuisine, because it's a good overview of specialties, and it points out that there are regional differences.
For example, would you believe that in my region of Bavaria, the local specialty is neither pork (which you might expect) nor deer (there are many hunters around), but... -- trout. Yes, fish. They grow them in artificial lakes or ponds, and prepare them in various ways, and they're delicious.
@abc[andsoon]: I don't know how far or wide you already traveled, but let me tell you just one thing: I never returned from a travel without having gained weight. It happens to people who are curious and want to try out everything. You sometimes may be disappointed, but mostly you're not. And everything is worth a try. You can visit Germany and only eat at McD's, Burger King, KFC and Subways, but you'll miss the very heart of Germany then. I know no other country, except France, where people define themselves more by the local food they eat. |

LOADS!
And hey there, to the other two answerers!
To the question: Define "good" for me, please? Are you having more of a sweet tooth or are you a vegetarian or... what exactly would you like to eat? There is something for everyone, and, like others have mentioned, there are regional tweaks.
For example, in my area of the woods, rose-hip marmalade is the traditional jam filled into the traditional "Faschingskrapfen", a kind of donut that is usually only sold during the winter months. I am so used to this filling, I don't eat a "Krapfen" anywhere else in Germany, since for me, they just aren't "Krapfen", if they are not filled with rose-hip marmalade. Many people I meet have no idea that something like rose-hip marmalade exists, much less that it tastes good.
Also, bread with loads of cumin in it is traditional from where I come from. It grosses most people out to even dream about eating that with anything else than maybe a creamy ground beef and cheese soup (which is also great), but I know a lot of guys who don't touch Nutella if its not spread on a slice of that cumin bread.
Nutella is something else that Germany is famous for, though to be fair, it is made by an Italian manufacturer, as are all "Kinder" products.
Not surprisingly, since Germany is the country with the most variety in breads and rolls, there are also numerous spreads and coldcuts, sausages, cheeses,...
And of course, right now there are all the different homemade Christmas cookies! Mhhhhmmm...

Yep.
Almost every region has fine varieties of breads, pastries, sausages.
German wine and beer are world famous.
The German industry produces chocolate, cookies and other sweets (gummi bears etc.) which are exported in every corner of the globe.
Even if you don´t want to eat traditional German cuisine, you have a broad choice of international restaurants in all major cities.
