Are there ANY GERMANS here? |
Don't you hate those extreme and irritating stereotypes and cliches about Germany and Germans? (you know, that you're rude, bad, aggressive, fat, etc)
Do these people ever went to Germany?
Can't they recognize Germans are really good in every thing they do?
(for ex like football just yesterday Bayern smashed Sporting Lisbon 7-1! 12-1 aggregate!) |

Hey there!
Jep, there are Germans here. This one for instance. ;)
About the stereotypes: You are right, but on the other hand: I can hardly convince those people that we are not. They want to believe what they want to believe, no matter what (and than tell us we are all racists...), and all the Germans on here could write up a storm, it wouldn't help.
And the next thing: Even if they would have been or would come to Germany: Some, I guess many, of said group would actively practice selective listening and only let those words reach their ears that can be interpreted as rude, loud, and whatnot.
Sure, there are rude, aggressive and bad people in Germany. So there are in other countries. But if one acts rude and snotty to other people, one should be able to handle the echo. You wouldn't kick a dog and expect it to lick your hand in adoration afterwords, now, would you?
I, for my part, have met many rude ands obnoxious US-Americans and UK people. I still love those countries, am looking forward to going there again as fast as I can and sometimes miss them very much. Does not mean I don#t miss Germany when I'm over there! |

About others envying our beautiful country there is a nice German proverb
'Viel Feind viel Ehr'
Translation Many enemies much honour.
I think that says it all ;) |

Showing up as native, political left-winger with a national attitude (yes, that's possible! Bayern München is the best football club in the world!), and I can get really bad about football. Fat, well, I could work on that; but aggressive: Yes, against extreme nationalists (I hesitate to call them Nazis, as at least the nazi leaders had brains, and the neos have none of it).
Yes, I can be rude. If someone does discuss with me on a specific topic and doesn't bring up arguements, I bring up mine and say "you're wrong, because:", instead of seemingly agree and softly turn his mind around. I know some Germans adapted to that, but I think denying one's culture of discussion in such a way does not promote the advancement of society either way. Instead it brings us back to a cosy group of animals in a cave who gather around the campfire and are afraid of their neighbors. |

Never heard those stereotypes about us before.
And there are too many overweight people here. Like in a lot of other industry nations.
But I often hear: trying to do things too perfectly, being too direct in what we say to others, insisting on our opinion....
Maybe someone else can come up with more. ;-) |

Might want to try the German version of Y!A (click on the German flag at the bottom of the page).
I'm not German, but I'm marrying someone from Bielefeld and have been there twice. For Americans to call Germans fat and aggressive is just ridiculous - the opposite is more true. Rude? Manners are a cultural thing. The Germans I know are all nice people, and even if they might occasionally blurt out "rude" things by American standards, it's clear they mean no harm by them. |

We had a German foreign exchange student in our American home when I was in high school (I am half German)
He was an awkward, unpleasant, condecending dieselhead
My impressions have nothing to do with stereotypes, they're firsthand
I knew a nice pretty German girl later on, she said that Americans were way friendlier |
