The closest KZ (concentration camp, or german: Konzentrationslager) to Heidelberg is Natzweiler-Struthof about 50 km southwest of Strasbourg / France in Alsace (german: Elsass); that is approx. 180 km from Heidelberg in the Vosges Mountains. Although rather small compared to other KZs it's still very impressive, and going there offers also a pretty scenic drive and the opportunity to stop at Strasbourg.

The closest camp to Heidelberg is Dachau, stated above, but it is about 3 hours away. Another really good one is Buchenwald, in Weimar, which is 3 and a half hours away. Also available to visit in Germany are Sachsenhausen, accessible via S-Bahn from Berlin, and Bergen-Belsen, north of Hanover. I've been to all but the latter. I don't know of any near Heidelberg, but here is Wikipedia's list if you want to do exhaustive research. :-)
For what it is worth, I recommend taking the time to see one of these, even if you take an early train out and a late train back. It's important to visit them. |

I didn't know it either until searching the internet. There is a former concentration camp (museum) relatively close to Heidelberg.

No there are no concentration camps near Heildelberg. There is only one camp left in West Germany and it is located in the town of Dachau, near Munich. You can walk around the grounds, it also has a museum and a few buildings, plan to spend about three hours. Most of the remaining camps are located in Poland. |
