Yes you can do it if you fullfill some requirementes as for example:

- You must prove that you can support your self ( as alien you are not supposed to become a burden fĂĽr the welfare)-

- According to the inmigration law, you are supposed to prove that you have enough knowledge of the german language, so that you can deal without problems with daily life ( go shopping, authorities etc.)

You can get more info in the following web (Official Web of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs)

http://www.auswaertiges-amt.de/diplo/en/WillkommeninD/EinreiseUndAufenthalt/uebersicht.html

more info about inmigration (inmigration act) :

If you are a citizen of the European Union, you need no special permits, you can do it right away.

Many US Americans work as civilians in the US Army. They buy homes and sometimes stay here for 12-15 years. In this case immigration laws don't apply.

But also civil Americans choose to live here. They must of course follow the rules. Why don't you just contact your nearest German Embassy, they will provide you with all the information.

Until soon in Germany!
