Avoiding Panhandlers in Germany?

I'm an American living in Germany. Because of the long commute to my job, I spend waaaay too much time waiting for trains at various train stations in Nordrhein-Westphalia. At least once a day someone approaches me with a hard-luck story about "forgetting" his train fare or something similar (It's the same people over and over for the most part). However, most people standing around me DO NOT get asked.

In the States, simply looking unapproachable (wearing headphones and sunglasses, not smiling, etc.) was enough to avoid these encounters. However, in Germany there must be some unwritten rule I'm violating, because these folks gravitate to me even in a crowd. I'm dressed like the people around me, and without speaking (which I don't), no one should be able to determine I'm American.

What's the secret of looking "unapproachable" in Germany?

You say you're American, and that might be part of the problem, since we're known as being a little more generous to panhandlers when we're tourists. But it sounds like you're a full fledged expat. Maybe you still have that fresh tourist vibe about you. Sometimes that takes a while to wear off. Especially if you are still excited to be living in a new culture. I'm not sure what city you're in, but German cities can be beautiful, even with the panhandlers (they're everywhere, aren't they?).

I'd venture that this is your problem and that it's just going to take a little time for you to start getting that everyday German vibe about you - at least when you need it.

Weird.. I always get approached in the US but only once or twice when I traveled in Germany. Maybe because I didn't speak much German

Danna
Just pretend you don't speak German

Try to pronounce:
"Schleich Dich!"
[sh-lie-x Dee-x]
where the x is the German ch sound.

You say that to one begging person approaching you, maybe a second one will try, and then that's it.

"Schleich Dich!" means "Get lost!"
