The Berlin Wall was built with American-Russian consent.

The official reason, on the Russian side was the "antifaschistischer Schutzwall", a wall that would never again allow a fascist regime to rule their territory.

The real reason was that each day people fled from the Russian occupied zone to the American enclave, West Berlin, and the Russians wanted to put an end to that.

The wall came down on 9th November 1989 when the GDR government announced on TV, by mistake, that the borders would be open for travel "from now on, immediately". People from the east and the west started tearing the wall down when border control couldn't handle the masses anymore.

Rumor has it that it turned out, years later, that the army of the GDR had order to shoot, but commanders refused to fire at their own people.

Rumors, trash - no correct answer. WE BUILT THE WALL. Because we had to defend ourselves of the imperialists of the West. We wanted to protect that their evil spys enter our lovely country and destroy the work of our glory farmers and workers ! And don't believe what Frackled the game pointer is saying. It wasn't the vopo building up the wall. Workers protected by the boarder guards built up the wall. And don't believe Alwin either. Our forces always shoot - we had no generals without balls unlike the West and the USA. How else you can explain we went in to CSFR and were willing to do that in Poland too.

The wall was built in 1961 by the East Germans. They said they were doing it to defend socialism, but it was really to keep East Germans in. In 1989, the soviet eastern bloc countries all started to fall. Gorbachev and the Soviet Union couldn't control them any longer. After many protests, the wall was torn down in November 1989. Germany became officially reunited in 1990.

Approximately 200 people got killed trying to pass the berlin wall.

After the world war 2 Germany got separated into 4 areas. USA,France,UK and Soviet Union.
The Allies were planning to administrate Germany all together.
Germany got divided into 2 states. East and West Germany.Also Berlin got separated in 2 parts. East Berlin and West Berlin.

Building the wall was a major state secret of East Germany.
During the night from the August 12th to 13th approximately 1000 secret state police/gestapo closed up every street towards West Berlin. They stopped every bus,every subway and every train.

Gestapo had nothing to do with it, that was the VoPo (Volkspolizei = police of East Germany), and West Germany definitely didn't build it, either.

Well, originally, the Berlin Wall was built by the West Germans in order to keep the West Germans from fleeing into East Germany. It came down in 1989 because Gorbachev, the current Soviet Union leader, took it down because of the ultimatum that president Reagan ordered, and almost two million people were killed trying to flee from east Germany to west Germany.
