Besides Berlin what are some other cool German towns to visit within a 250 km radius of Berlin?

Or if there is absolutely nothing within the 250 km radius, what other towns are there to see?

Nearest bigger town, which is really worth a visit is, as stated above, Potsdam. 140,000 inhabitants, some really great castles and some nice old buildings and great lakes to swim in (in summer), not much nightlife though and not really a shopping paradise.
Two really great cities approximately 200km south of Berlin are Leipzig and Dresden. Not really rich cities, but exciting and especially Dresden is beautiful. Leipzig is very cheap and thus you'll find a lot of young people there. Both have about 500,000 inhabitants and are really worth a visit (for me they are in the german top five)!
In the north there are some medium sized cities about 200-250km distance. Especially Stralsund is nice (not a big town though), as is Wismar and Schwerin. Rostock is the biggest city in the north of Berlin, 200,000 inhabitants, not that beautiful, but the nightlife is ok, and the coast is not far away (there is a famous beach at Warnemünde, a nearby town).

In this order: Potsdam, Dresden, Hamburg, Leipzig

You can also visit Weimar if you are a bit of a culture/history buff, but it is a bit farther away.

Nice nature sights in the area are the Spreewald, Elbsandstein (Elbe Sandstone Mountain), Rügen Island and the Mecklenburger Seenplatte (Lake Region) or the Harz mountains.

I don't know if you'd consider Potsdam as cool but have a look at it yourself:

They do have some nice spots there and Potsdam might be the only town close to Berlin that's worth a visit..

Otherwise go and see Hamburg or Munich :-)

Give Hamburg a try. It's the second largest city in Germany and the night life is just great. I grew up there and partied 24/7.
