Best German Christmas Market? |
Could anyone recommend a German Christmas Market that would give great atmostphere for the christmas season and not too commercial? I was thinking of somewhere where it would be very different from the big christmas markets of nurnberg. Thanks! |

Stuttgart and Ulm both have nice Christmas markets. And even though it's not in Germany, I think the market in Salzburg, Austria is one of the nicest ones I've seen. |

Great question! I lived in Germany for 4 years and went to many a Christkindelmarkt. I just loved wandering around looking at the crafts and things, listening to live Christmas music and sipping on a warm mug of Gluhwein.
I would personally recommend the one in Stuttgart. None of them are very "commercial" at all. You'll not see any sponsor banners for the likes of Bud or Amp hanging at any Christmas market in Deutschland! |

There are a lot, but I could only tell you... -- that means, I can't because I don't know in what region of Germany you're going to be or are interested in. Almost every village has a christmas market where you can find local varieties of things; I personally prefer the markets that are explicitely announced as a "Handwerkermarkt" ("craftsmen's market"), because I like to have wooden figurines and such, and you really can get them there for a good price. And of course, on a German christmas market, if they don't have anything else to offer, at least you'll never lack a decent supply of Bratwurst, Semmel, and Glühwein. |

Nuernberger Christkindles Markt (Nuremburg)
Strassbourg (Alsace/France but very close to Germany)
Stuttgart is very nice as well

Most of them are charming, I like the once in Braunschweig, Muenster, Bremen, Oldenburg, Luebeck, Dresden and Erfurt a lot, because the setting is in front of historical buildings or on historical sites. |

I personally like the Christmas market at Munich, but maybe that's just because I'm biased. If you're in Bavaria, you could go to Augsburg, Freising, or Bamberg. |

Rotheburg ob der Tauber
It is a beautiful town that is still in one piece and was not destroyed by the wars. The town itself gives one the Christmas feeling even in the summer because . . . kathi wohlfahrt is there.

I would also vote for Rothenburg ob der Tauber...was there quite a few years ago and it was really lovely...the city is within a very old city wall and is very traditional. Another good one is in Innsbruck (Austria) where Swarovski does a great crystal display. |
