There are many beautiful places in Germany. For example, you can travel by train or ship through the Rhine valley. It has many old castles and old villages while being fairly easy to access from the international airports of Frankfurt and Cologne.
If you like history and Romans, check out Speyer.

I was stationed in Germany from 1978-82. I was in Augsburg which I beleived to be a beautiful city, and spent some time in Munich (October Fest) and it was awesome.

Check out Heidelberg -- great castle, beautiful location set in the hills with the famous footbridge over Neckar River which flows out onto the plains cut by the Rhine River. Plenty of shopping, great choices of restaurants, great sights to see. Schwetzingen is nearby with its beautiful palace and gardens, not to mention the great outdoor restaurants there just outside the gates.

Mark Twain lived in Heidelberg for a couple of years, and loved it because of its charm and beauty.

You're close to other great locations like Baden Baden, the Black Forest (Schwartzwald), Strasbourg France, etc. The rail network will take you anywhere you want, so your choices are endless!!!

Well...pretty much any place you go in Germany will have old buildings and beautiful country, which is great! I can't tell you about the northern part of Germany as I never made it there, but I lived in the Rhine Valley part of Germany which is very beautiful. I LOVED seeing and visiting the castles! There are many many castles to visit along the Rhine River. I'd go to Marksburg Castle which is North of RÃ¼desheim then turn around and drive down the river to Rudesheim then continue to Mainz, and on and on if you want. It's all very pretty country with hills and hills of vineyards as well. Or...I also travelled South past Munich (Munchen on maps) to Garmisch which borders Austria & Switzerland. It was gorgeous with the awesome Alps as it's background! It's in Bavaria which is a tad different with the way they built and decorated their homes. Down in that area they also have more castles that you can visit. (Of course). Ones that belonged to King Ludwig. They are wonderfully decorated and very majestic. Especially Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. I'm very envious of you and the trip you are planning. We miss Germany very much, and still wish that we lived there. Enjoy! And soak in every minute!

Potsdam. This is a small town south of Berlin. I would say this is one of the most Beautiful towns I had visited in Germany. There is a park with a very beuatiful Yellow Castle Sanssouci. Along with many other old Buildings also. There are many other places in Germany too. But my favorite lies in Potsdam.

I loved Dusseldorf it is great. It is beautiful. Go a little ways away and it is beautilful country. Another good place is Stuttgart and Berchestgarden.

Freiburg im Breisgau is supposedly the sunniest and warmest city in Germany. It's very close to Baden-Baden, Strasbourg, Colmar, Karlsruhe and Heidelberg, to name a few. It's definitely bigger than Heidelberg, and in my opinion, offers much more to a visitor. It also has a fairly major train station that would be a great starting point for visiting those other cities.

Years ago I was stationed in Bamberg. Have been in love with the town ever since. It was spared destruction during WW2 so most of the pre WW2 buildings are still original. Some of the buildings date back to the 800s. And my Favorite bar opened in 1572. they are many post Roman buildings, Baroque and Renaissance periods. There are a number of palaces and places garderns to walk through. The Regintz river and canal form part of the city into an island with many bridges.
It is a nice place to wander, read a book and drink a wine or a beer.

The northern part of Germany is very nice, too. Hamburg is great if you're looking for a bit of big city flair. Otherwise you can try Bremen - there are very many old buildings there.

I went to germany in 1986 and had a great 2 weeks. I landed in Hanoh and then drove to Sturgart. we went to amsterdam and france. We then flew back from Hanoh back to the states. I loved Stutgart and thought that it was so beautiful.

I would love to go again to!
