If you are there for a month, you can do both. A month is plenty of time to explore a country as a tourist, if you are limiting yourself to such small regions as you mentioned you'll see lots even if you are there only for 14 days. |

I lived in Frankfurt for ten years, so of course I will recommend it. Frankfurt is simply a true world city and you will not be able to experience everything it has to offer, not even in one month. Stuttgart is in a nice area of Germany, and it is a wealthy city and the home of some of the German carmakers, but other than that it is not very exciting. Frankfurt is the more cosmopolitan of the two for sure and will seem more like a large US city in that regard - lots of skyscrapers, entertainment and dining choices, diverse population, extensive subway system, etc. Adding to Frankfurt's appeal is the role it plays as a transportation hub for central Europe. You can get a one month Eurail pass and take daytrips to other German and European countries, with Frankfurt as your base. Paris, for example, is a 4 hour train ride, as are Berlin, Amsterdam, Prague, and many others. Finally, it's a party town! Be it traditional German beer or apple wine festivals or swanky nightclubs, they've got it all there. Cost of living-wise, Frankfurt is the more expensive of the two, but you get more bang for your buck for sure. You can always stay in the suburbs to cut costs and take the subway into downtown each day as you continue your explorations. Post more specific questions if you like. |

Frankfurt area would be my choice. First...there are about 30 different day trips that you could make out of the area....using rental car or train. Second...the Rhein River excursions start in Mainz and go up to Koln, which is an all-day trip. You will find the full trip to be an experience....and a second trip would be worth it to stop in St. Goarshausen....get off and sip wine for three hours....then return to Mainz on the return boat. Third item....Hahn airport and Ryan Air are just next door....with cheap flights all over Europe. You could jump on a flight on Friday and go to Rome for less than $70. The final reason....for urban walks....you can't beat Wiesbaden....which you could spend an entire day just walking around the city (go to the old roman ruins on the hill too). |

Very interesting question. If you're planning a "trip", then I would say Frankfurt, Nuernberg, or Munich. If you're planning to "loiter" for a month, try England. |
