Can I start from Cologne in the morning and take a cruise on KD German lines. When do I reach Mainz?

During my trip in Europe, I will be in Cologne for two days and then take a cruise to Mainz. How long does this trip take and what is the frequency of steamers? How far is it from Mainz to Frankfurt where I intend to spend the night? How many days must one plan in Frankfurt?

Due to the schedule on

it's not possible to make it from Cologne to Mainz by boat only in one single day. You'll have to go at least to Bad Breisig by train, or maybe to Koblenz. Arrival would be 7:30 PM in Mainz.

From Mainz to Frankfurt it's about a 45min ride by local train, running frequently until late at night. ( http://www.bahn.de )

Depending on your interests you could spend a single day or more than a week in Frankfurt ( http://www.frankfurt.de ) - impossible to give you any recommendations.

The most beautiful part of the cruise is between Koblenz and Bingen. If you can arrange that just take the steamer from Koblenz and get off in Bingen. It takes a loooong time because you are going upstream! Instead of spending the night in Frankfurt you could also stay in Mainz - it is a University City which means there are about 30.000 students, it´s 2000 years old, has a 1000 year old cathedral in the middle of town and plenty of other things to see and do. If you ever read Julius Cesar´s books, he mentioned it in there. Much older than Frankfurt, less congested and less crime as well :-D
I like Frankfurt, don´t get me wrong, but I prefer Mainz. Great people, great history and good places to go out at night. The hotels are a bit cheaper than in Frankfurt as well.
Hope you catch good weather for your trip and get to thoroughly enjoy it!!!!

I don't know the frequency of boats, but the trip from Cologne to Mainz shouldn't take more than a day two at most. Mainz to Frankfurt is a rather short distance, less than an hour by car, although traffic around Frankfurt can be a problem. You can look up distances on http://maps.google.de/ if you want to. And how many days you need in Frankfurt depends entirely on what you want to do there :-)
