Depends upon your age - if you are older than 30 and combine tham with colored socks and shorts, it will look quite stupid. For younger people long jeans and tennis shoes are ok.
But the most important thing is that you feel comfortable, so who cares how you look? You are the one who has got to live with sore feet.
It is really true that in Europe people walk quite a bit more than the average US-American. A large majority of Europeans who live in cities do not own a car, but take public transport, ride a bike or walk for their way to work. And unless you are on a guided tour in a tour bus, you'll be following their example on your trip to Europe. This plus musuem trips will mean that you'll spent about 10 hours each day standing up and walking around. So go for comfortable shoes!
BTW, I really really like Ecco, Rhode, Birkenstock and Geox shoes. I can also recommend Gallus for men. Most quality European brands are designed to be comfortable, with all these walking Europeans in mind. Maybe you can get some nice shoes in Europe? Non-sneaker, really stylish, very comfortable and for a fraction of the price you would pay in the US.

Yes, you can wear tennis shoes, sport shoes, whatever shoes you want, including tacky Texas cowboy boots. And No, you will not look like an idiot. I see German men walking around with sandals wearing socks in the summertime which I think looks totally idiotic. So, do not worry about what shoes you are wearing. We do a lot more walking in Europe than in America so wear whatever shoes you want. Just make sure they are comfortable to walk in!
As far as style in Germany? They wear black in all combinations, or a color /pattern scheme that would get first prize at a Trailer Park fashion show. |

Just don't wear white New Balance... That is a fashion of the Neo-Nazis and you will look like a bad person. Believe me, tennis shoes are OK but white ones are unusual, I have silver ones I bought in Munich to replace the white new balance that I learned were the Neo_Nazi favorites! |

Yes; you can wear tennis shoes in Germany. Just don't walk around with a huge backpack like you're going to climb Mt. Everest. That says "dumb American.".......good luck! |

From everything I've heard, you'll look like an American tourist if you wear them.
So no. Unless that's the look you're going for. |
