The4 train from Baden Baden to Frankfurt goes along the edge of Black forest but still the route is quite nice.
The time it takes depend if you chose a fast train ICE or a regional train I will add you the link .

Just a friend.
To actually answer your question...no. Baden-Baden is in the Black Forest, however it's just at the edge of it. Baden-Baden would be your jumping off point, not the destination. The train ride from Frankfurt is about an hour and a half. You will see beautiful countryside but none of the Black Forest. For that you need to rent a car and drive in from Baden-Baden. Be sure to visit the towns of Titisee, Freiburg, Freudenstadt, Furtwangen (great clock museum), Sasbachwalden and the Triberg waterfalls. Of course make sure you have a full day for Baden-Baden and it's spas.

As your friend said, it is far better to rent a car or take some kind of bus tour to see the Black Forest. You need to stop in some of the towns and walk around. Eat at some quaint gasthouse or cafe. Have a beer or two. It will be even greater if you can have some good weather while you are there.

I would not really consider Baden-Baden as part of the black forest. If you want so see something, you might wanna go to the Titisee or down to Waldshut, Furthwangen, etc. I don't know about train connections, but Baden-Baden ain't black forest...
