Munich is a great place to live. It's one of the most expensive cities in Germany, but for good reason. Public transportation, as for all major european cities is convenient and efficient. You can go almost go anywhere in Europe without ever owning a car. Even if there are no shops right in your area, shopping is easily reached via bus or rail service, such as the subway or suburban train system. You'll want to do most of your shopping in the city center. You can take the U-Bahn (subway) to the Marienplatz, for example. Major department stores include Kaufhof and Karstadt...comparable to Target or Kohls (maybe a touch nicer even) in the US, but with a grocery department. There is also a major shopping mall called the Olympia Einkaufszentrum or OEZ...also reachable by subway.
