We stayed in the Hoppegarten Hotel in Hoppegarten between Christmas and New Year. It's a bit off the beaten track (end of the 'tube' line) but was very reasonable. Not good if you want to be right in the centre of things (about 40 mins plus a short bus/taxi ride) but very pleasant otherwise.

Auschwitz was not an amusing answer. If you have been there you will experience one of the most moving and tragic places on earth.

As for hotls in Berlin, I have been a few times and stayed in varying standards of hotel. You can find cheapish accommodation - it depends on which area of Berlin you want to saty. All areas have from hostels to 5 star luxury - if you can afford 5 star stay at the Radisson in Alexanderplatz - it's amazing!

Hostel-wise try The Heart Of Gold, Helterskelter or Circus. All great hostels and easily googled

Hotel-wise I wouldn't know, because I'm cheap and stick to hostels!

Berlin Plaza Hotel.Ku Damm is very reasonable and only a ten minute walk from the Zoo Bahnoff. The last time we stayed was before last Christmas so prices may have altered slightly,at that time it cost around £54 per night bed and breakfast for two people. The booking was made through Expedia.

Depends where you want to live

Look here

or here
http://www.hotel.de/

Lots of hostels around the centre, otherwise a decent single room without breakfast can cost from 30 euros a day ie Berlin is a cheap city!

Savigny Hotel in Savigny Platz. Basic but very clean and close to the Zoologischergarten and Ku-damm
