Samian's Tenth Account

Can you give me some basic information on the culture of Germany? :]?

I'm an American, and I must admit, I know little to nothing about Germany nor the Germany people (with the exception of the Nazis, which we all learn about through school education and the media).

I know a fair bit about French, Russian, English, and Italian cultures, but when I see Germany on the map, I don't have any clue what the people there historically live like, what kind of music they have, the foods they eat, etc.

To me, in the photos they look identical to white Americans!

Could you tell me some things about German culture? )

I am German and checked the link about wiki/Germany and looks like this really covers most of it. Also our holiday celebrations are a bit different then those in the States, for example in most families kids still do not get to see the christmastree until x-mas eve, and they find their gifts under this fully decorated tree that evening . The 24 days to wait until this special evening kids usually get from their parents a calender with 24 little doors, one to open each day and most of the calenders have chocolates behind these doors. Germans are "known" as beer-drinking people but there are also many (often older)Germans who prefer a good glass of wine. Also Germans are a bit more open minded when it comes to sunbathing- like it is totally normal in the city where I live for people in summer to lay topless by the river or other areas where people go for laying in the sun, we do not have to go to a special nudist area for that. Many Germans do like Sauerkraut as it is said, but we do never eat it on a bun with a hot-dog,lol, like I have seen it in the States and German chocolate cake, the one you name like this is called this name because it requires the ingredient that you call "German chocolate", we call the same chocolate just baking chocolate. Our pancakes are not as fluffy as yours and we do not eat them with sirup (gosh I love those), some people do eat pancakes sweet but many also eat them as a main dish and salty (with lettuce and such).
those are just a few things that jumped into mind which are or were different then those in the States, hope you were interested in them.

As a starter the wiki article is not too bad, go on with encyclopedia britannica ;)
I hope this helps

During the last decade of the 20th century Germany has transformed its attitude towards immigrants considerably. Until the mid-nineties the opinion was widespread that Germany is not a country of immigration, even though about 10% of the population were of non-German origin. After the end of the influx of so-called Gastarbeiter (blue-collar guest-workers), refugees were a tolerated exception to this point of view. Today the government and German society are acknowledging the opinion that controlled immigration should be allowed based on the qualification of immigrants.[134]

Germany is an industrialized western first world country.
People are "european", culturally interested and earnest.
Germans call people only friends when they have known them for years.
Music: 70 % american charts, the rest is German music.
Food: very intercultural. You find american fast-food-restaurants next to turkish kebap, italian pizza or chinese food.
Attitude: much more open minded than US-Americans, especially regarding sexuality, drugs and parenting.
To be honest: the German youth is trying to imitate what they see in American movies or on mtv.
Language: many english words

They are a lot like Americans in some ways. Probably more so than the French, Italians or Russians.

They live like most Europeans. They eat meat and potatoes, and commonly bread and lunchmeat and cheeses. They also have great breakfasts with "broetchen" (rolls).

They are more reserved and polite than Americans but difficult to get to know.

95 % of young germans don't know about the wars. German foods are like red meats and things like meatballs. Germans also like alcoholic Jagermeister-Spirits and larger like Heineken. The just lead a normal western life .
