All of the S-Bahn trains I've ridden have been on the "honor system". That is, nobody checks your ticket before you get on. Every once in a while, somebody comes along on the train and asks to see your ticket. If you don't have one, you get a big fine. I've only ridden the U once in Frankfurt, and I don't recall if it was the same or if there were turnstiles like in many subway systems.
Basically, the U-bahn is a central metropolitan subway system. The S-bahn is a commuter rail that covers the wider metropolitan area and suburbs. Then you have the Regional trains which go from city to city, and then the express trains - IC and ICE. The ICE is the nicest, fastest train. Many of the S-bahn and regional trains are slow, bumpy, and noisy. The trains in Germany are generally more expensive than I've found them to be in Italy or South Korea. I think they're roughly comparable to the rest of Northern/Western Europe. And of course they blow the pants off of Amtrak.
To ride the U-Bahn, you generally just wait for the next one to show up. The S-Bahn has a schedule posted in the train station. There's a big yellow board that lists departures, and a similar white board that lists arrivals.
You buy tickets from a machine in the train station. There's a button to change which language is displayed. There's a list of destinations on the front of the machine that each have a number - you enter the destination number you want, then you enter the type of ticket you want: Single ride, Child, Day Pass ("Tageskarte") or Group Day Pass (Gruppentageskarte) which is good all day (both directions) for up to five people. That's a very good deal when you can use it. The machine takes bills and coins, and gives change. It gives you a printed ticket that you have to keep with you while you ride. The price is based on how far you're going, and the ticket is only valid while you're between your origin and destination. The tageskarte is good all day and lets you go back and forth as much as you want, including making stops along the way. Just make sure you pay for your furthest destination. As an example, the single adult fare from Frankfurt Airport to Wiesbaden is €3.65. That's about a 40-minute train ride. Every S-train I've ridden has had route maps posted above all the doors. |

What do you want to know? They're very efficient and easy to use. I would give you a website to check out, but your question is pretty vague? Are you American? European? Looking to move there? visit? All of these things have a huge effect on how you can use the U/S-Bahn. |
