I'm assuming you're from the US. If you wear khaki Dockers and running type shoes and a baseball hat you might as well wrap the stars and stripes around you too. Just kidding. If you want to blend it's not so much what you wear as your actions. Speak in a lower tone for one thing. Americans yell compared to Germans. I can say this. Lose the baseball hat that's a dead give away. Germans don't wear them like we do. Enjoy your trip... |

It depends how old you are. Germans dress about the same as Americans but are usually a bit more stylish, especially men. That is, 20-something men might be more likely to dress like "metrosexuals" in Germany than here. But unless you're doing business, jeans and t-shirts are perfectly normal as long as they're clean and neat. You should have no problem blending in appearance-wise, but as soon as you open your mouth they will know you're American, even if you speak German. |

they tend to wear a lot of black when they go out. dark clothing is always better for the younger generation. |

Blending in is not really necessary in Germany. But if you don't want to stick out, don't wear cargo shorts with flip flops and a tight-fitting surfer-dude t-shirt. So American. Taking away one of the items in that equation, though, is probably enough. If you really want to fit in, wear glittery clothes. Oh yes, glitter for men is (unfortunately) a new style here.
A white, zip-front hoodie (preferably with a silver, glittery dragon or skull and crossbones on the back...) pulled over whatever you're wearing will make you fit in really well, too. |
