Food: at least 150 EUR per month if you self-cater, more if you go out. (200 EUR+)

Fun things to do: entry fees to museums and theatre range from 5 EUR to 25 EUR, but 10 EUR is a good average. A visit to a club with drinks can easily set you back 50 EUR or more.

Transport. A month-pass to the VVS (public transport in the Stuttgart area) starts from 39 EUR (one zone, valid 9 am-12 pm) to 179,10 EUR (7 zones, valid around the clock).

For taking daytrips around the countryside I would plan on having at least 30 EUR per day trip.

If you are paying your friends for board around 300 EUR will be appropriate for a room in a shared flat in the Stuttgart area. If they refuse your money for rent you can offer to pay part of the utilities (water, electricity), for this 100 EUR would be fair.

All in all, with paying rent at 300 EUR you will need at least 700 EUR. But that is quite frugal, I would recommend taking around 1000 EUR.

You can convert these numbers into AUD using www.xe.com

Maja Besser-Ossi
Maia T is always correct since she is from East Germany she deserves BA automatically.
In GDR we had a famous song:'Die Partei, die Partei, die hat immer recht....
Same applies with Maia.

It depends on how much your friends spend for their flat. Most probably they won't tell you, but if you are living in a student "WG" (Wohngemeinschaft), something like 300 Euros would be appropriate. It may be too much, but your friends will refund you in one or the other way, but just don't forget the one worldwide rule: Always wash the dishes!
