Cultural Question, What are they called?

In Germany there is a old custom where young men dress in a certain manner. They wear long black bell bottom pants,a traditional double breasted black vest with large buttons (stenz) over a white shirt. Topped off with a large black hat. They wander their way through the county carrying few personal possessions in a small sack, and do odd jobs for food and board.Today I saw 2 of them hitchhiking. There is a special name for this dying tradition. What are they called?

As the two others said, those guys are carpenters, usually just done with their apprenticeship, looking to learn new techniques from others of their trade by traveling through Germany and taking on the odd carpentry job wherever they can. It is called "auf Walz gehen" or "auf Walz sein". They are not allowed to beg for anything, and the sole way of sustaining themselves is through their trade. They usually keep a book recording everything they did and where and who hired them and stuff.
I have heard of some of them traveling around the world doing this, not containing themselves to Germany only, but I don't know if that would be allowed by strict tradition. Well, apparently it worked out for them. ;)
Hope that helped!

They are called "Wandergesellen" or "Zimmermannsgesellen". It's an ancient German tradition that woodworkers wander around with their clothes and tools for three years, applying for jobs in different towns, and carrying their tools with them. Tradition says that they're not allowed to carry mobile phones or banking cards, and they have some special rituals, something like in freemasonry.

As Alwin said, they're Zimmermanngesellen or in English they're carpenters looking for a job. But it doesn't mean that all carpenters are doing this. It used to be popular some hundred years ago and a few guys are still doing it.

Another little addition to the above stated answers, "Wandergesellen" are not allowed to come near their hometown, they have to keep a certain distance.
