DB Bahn (Germany) train tickets?

Hello, everyone!
Does anyone know if I'm allowed to use a ticket that was bought for a certain time, let's say 8PM, to later departures in same or different categories?

Example: an ICE ticket for 8PM. In case I am not able to get this train, does this ticket allow me to travel in a later train under the category IC, EC or RE, for example? Well, considering it's the same price or cheaper...

Thank you very much!

There are both kinds:

- tickets which are valid for any train within their validity period (called "Normalpreis" - normal fare)
- tickets which are valid only on one train, schedule printed on the ticket (called "Sparpreis" - savings fare)

Not surprizingly, the less flexible tickets are cheaper (25% or 50%, depending on train and time), available as return trip only and only on certain trains and in limited numbers, so you better book ahead.

Actually, it's not about price. If you get your cheap ticket for 8pm train- it means that the train is not that popular. And doing such trick, like you want to do, you will go to popular late train instead of the 8pm train.
I'm talking about Spezialpreis tickets.
If you have bought your ticket at regular price or as Sparpreis50/Sparpreis25- may be you will be able to take later train, because they usually are full flexible.

Joe N Carolin
usually no, the ticket you have purchsed is for that train only, it should explain that on your ticket, some will let you change it to a different train for a small amount of money...

Probably not, but I would go to the ticket counter and see if you can exchange it.
