hello...!

Do I have to use the (ex. die) articles in this sentence? (GERMAN)?

I have to translate this test question:
The waiter recommends veal cutlet or beef rolls with potatoe dumplings.

Here is how I translated it:
Der Ober empfiehlt Schnitzel oder Rindsrouladen mit Kartoffelklossen

Do I have to put the articles before the foods? Like...
(das) Schnitzel

(die) Rindsrouladen

(die) kartofelossen

You don't have to put an article in front of the noun at all, as it's about generic nouns, like in:

"Möchten Sie ein Bier?"
(Would you - an individual - like a beer?")

contrary to (imagine a beer garden):
"Wollt Ihr Bier?"
(Would you - altogether - like some beer?")

So in your case, you'd leave out all the articles. A German "Ober" would say:
"Möchten Sie Schnitzel oder Rindsroulade? Ich kann Ihnen dazu Kartoffelklöße empfehlen. Möchten Sie auch einen gemischten Salat dazu?"

---
I really love people thumbing me down who don't know that I'm native German. (Yes, sometimes I don't quote sources just because I can.)

You did a perfect translation.

Roni and Alwin are right.

Cassiak812 you might be right when talking about the French language but in this case you're unfortunately nor right.

No it sounds fine, I'm a native german speaker, but it really depends on how picky your teacher is. and waiter is Der Kellner (or Die Kellnerin), of course if you guys learned it as Ober, then use that :D

hope this helps.

yup thats perfect i lived in germany for 7 years and speak it fluently so trust me ur translations were PeRfEcT!!

ARRGH!!!
No, you can say it like this. As the waiter does not recommend a PARTICULAR plate of the food, but the food in general, you can leave out the articles. But it is "mit Kartoffelklössen"... :)

I've only been taking German for a few weeks, but I'm pretty sure you use the articles. I've taken French for four years, and you have to use articles for everything, especially food. Many languages do this . Instead of saying "I like movies," you would say," I like the movies." Hope this helps!
