Yes you need children seats until the kids are 12 years old.

yes

Yes, you will need seats for all three of them (they're mandatory for children up to 12 years), in size corresponding to the children's age. But you should be able to rent them together with the car.

rio-blanco
Up to the age of 12 if the child is less than 150 cm (59 inch) of height, it is law in Germany, that the kids have a child seat.

Yes it is required by law in Germany to use children seats until the child is 12.

It doesn't matter what country you are in, you should always have a children's seat for children under the age of 6.

travelhun
Yes, they are mandatory here for all children who are either a) under 12 years old or b) smaller than 150cm in height.
The seats must be booster seats with their own back rest and head protection and you need to fix them to three-point belts only - no seats that come with only two-point belts. You can rent them along with your vehicle, just make sure it has enough belts.

Even if these restrictions may seem stiff to you, they are really just protecting your kids. They are also strictly enforced by German police; while they may let you off the hook for a minor infraction esp. as a foreigner, but that mood will evaporate immediately when they spot someone with unprotected kids in their car.
A stiff fine will follow, payable immediately. Also, you may not commence your journey until you come up with seats, ie. you could be left stranded on some German highway stop.
