Do any Germans still call their children ADOLF?

In fact, the statisic shows that in the last year only one child was called Adolf, so the name is not very popular and the most people consider it to be unrespectful and not really funny -or whatever someone migth think it is - to do so (besides, that the name is very oldfashioned).

male4girlz
Huh, finally another German-Nazi-question in the travel (!) section.

The thing about Adolf is: It's an rather old fashioned name. Even if there would have been no Hitler at all people would not name their child like that, just like they don't name their girls Ingeborg, Erna or Kaethe anymore, which were pretty popular names here about 100 years ago.

Cooper
I highly doubt it, most Germans are ashamed that Adolf Hitler ever had power over them!

SCHUMIGIRL1956
i dont think they do much these days but in the 1930s and 40s they did most germans i know choose names like wolfgang or klaus

ShlomoNYC
In 2006 one baby was named Adolf in Germany ---those have been the most popular names in 2007 for boys.

Hmm, Adolf I've heard but recently a 'Neo-Nazi' who called their dog Hitler got in trouble with the law. I suppose it's one of those things, not comparable to Jack the Ripper as WWII was a lot more recent and we know it actually happened. Some people could have problems with that name at some point as people are rude so it'd not be the best name to call your child.
PS, it's not a very nice name either ;)

Citizen of EU
Well I'm sure that the Americans still name their children George, even though they are ashamed of Bush. A bad comparison, I know, but not that hard to understand.

It is frowned upon for obvious and sensible reasons.

I think that he was in fact Austrian so may be just may be they do

liebekatz2
Hahahaha! No, they don't. Not just because of Hitler but because it's a crappy name anyway.

No I don't think so. This child will be always having problems, because the name.

I actually don't know a family who called their son Adolf again, except for a friend of mine, who is named Adolf in the fourth or fifth generation, I don't know. But his father wanted to continue the family tradition (they have a small company), so he called his son Adolf again. (Nothing to do with Hitler, anyway. They had their family shop long before.) But the Adolf "the fourth" (or fifth) I know gave his son another name. I don't actually know if "Rudolf" is that much better, but at least, that's a good compromise between modern names and family tradition.

Yes, it is just a name, just like being called Peter in the UK, not everyone relates you to the Yorkshire Ripper!

Ting Tong
They sure do. my Aunt Hitler named her son just that last week!

Yes ,often as second name. They love their Fuhrer.
I know people in Germany who are very proud of him and say they are not ashamed of anything...
This is true ,I was told this several times ,of course I had to put them at ease by telling them "Hitler wasn't that bad"
One of them was a Guy who was a volontier in the army at 15.
Sadly they will never admit it in public.
And I believe they will do it again if they could.I studied in Greifswald and Rostock 5 years.During my patient visits I had acess to their houses ,photos of their relatives with ss-uniform were in their sitting room.
In one of the hospital in west germany there was a important former ss-officier treated with special honors ,own room ,own carer, special food, and he wasn't even realy sick ,his place should be in a care house for alderly people...
His Identity was kept secret ,I learn about it when he did not accept that I treat him ,his whish was granted ,I insisted for an explication...
