Do germans and austrians hate swiss people? |
I am learning german in high school, and my german teacher is ethenically german but he grew up in america, he was describing the gernan speaking countries, and he talked about switzerland in a rude way, he was trying to imitate a swiss person and he said "Who needs to join your stupid european union, then we will have to give money to poor countries, were swiss, we,ve got mountains and lakes and we dont need to join your stupid union." Everybody in my class laughed, but I was actually offended by that. when I went to europe switzerland was my favourite country, and swiss people were the nicest Ive ever met, they were glad to help us if we needed directions and actually like the fact that you are visiting their country, while germans on the other hand were infact very rude and unwilling to help us if we were lost, and they looked at us as if I were a retard or something. so do germans and austrians generally hae swiss people, or is it just my teacher Additional Details I think that he is representing germans, because he said that he lived in germany for a few years, but hes actually kind of a funny teacher, he said that some perfectly normal words in english, mean something bad in german, such as light in german and mist in english, both mean something bad in the other language, mist means manure in german, so when he was playing basket ball with a friend and the other person's shot didnt make it, he said
you missed, which kind of sounds like
you mist, he had many other experiences like that |

You should not generalize your experience with one German.
Of course there are differences between Germans, Austrians, and Swiss (and between people from many regions of Germany as well, for that matter), and people make jokes about neighbour people, but we really don't "hate" each other. Far from it. |

Teacher sounds like a dink. I don't anybody who hates the Swiss, especially with their ability to stay neutral. Usually teachers with such skewed opinions only teach in college. |

I don't think Germans and Austrians actually hate the Swiss; they hate their countrypeople and tax evaders, who find a safe harbor in Switzerland. But matteroffactly (sorry if I overuse that word in my postings, but I love it) we love the Swiss, and I had the very pleasure to meet one of them personally, some years ago: DJ Bobo. And I can confirm that he likes Thai food. |

Okay, I AM german and I don't hate the swiss people!
Hm, it's not my favorite country, but I saw it three times and it's really beautiful. And I also know a few people from switzerland and they were all very nice. It's a very multicultural land (I mean, german, french and italian switzerland) and it's really amazing to hear so many people speaking so many languages ^^
I don't know exactly the reason why your teacher doesn't like the switzerland, but this comment really wasn't pedagogically useful! |

I'm German and I don't hate the Swiss, I don't know anyone who does. I think your teacher sounds like an arrogant ***, sorry. |

that attitude isn't surprising. Fully joining the EU is a big deal, and the Swiss are holding out.
Yeah - the germans and the austrians would make fun of the Swiss. But the swiss would make fun of them right back. the Swiss actually hate talking in Hoch Deutsch, preferring English. And yes - they are super polite!
I've found that pretty much everyone in europe makes fun of everyone else - and the country that is physically closest is the one they will make fun of the most.
Sorry you have a rude teacher - he should be more diplomatic. |

People hate what they are usually most envious or fearful of... Homophobes hate gay people because they're afraid they are gay themselves... Racists hate people that have a more cultural background then they do... anti-Semites are usually jealous of "Jewish" wealth...
Hatred doesn't just appear out of thin air, it usually starts from envy or fear.
Lovingly,
Mom |
