Do germans appreciate someone who treis to speak their language ?
i want to go to Germany and may be live there for a while to pick up the language but I am a beginner. Do people their appreciate it if I try my best speaking German and try and understand me or will they like just tell me to piss off? And how far can I go with English in places like shops and taxis? Additional Details lol i am not German i wish i was though i love the culture, history and language.
That really depends a bit on your skills if your tries are rather good ones it will be appreciated if you butcher the language it will not be appreciated.
How far you get with English depends a bit of the region and the people you have to deal with. But in most places you will find enough people who speak English.

As touched on in some of the other answers you will probably find it rather hard to get someone to practise your German with. The reason lies less in the them frowning upon your (mis-)use of the language than, as also mentioned before, that the school system is introducing English as a foreign language very early on and a lot of people will be very eager to put their school knowledge into practise.
On the other hand: Depending on where you are going or whom you are dealing with - especially the former East and people of the "older generation" if you allow this gross overgeneralization - it might prove helpful to brush up on essential German sentences.

It's been years since I lived in Germany, but no one seemed to mind my trying to speak the language. You can get pretty far with English most of the time however, as it is required in elementary school (and kids on the college track keep taking it in high school and are usually fluent), so everyone has heard enough of it to point you to a bathroom or tell you how much something costs. You can probably get away with learning your numbers and around fifty tourist words so that you can be polite--when they see you are American, there is a good chance they'll just start speaking English to you so they have a chance to practice it.

I went on a couple of German courses and whenever I've tried to use my "German" I get answered in English, especially on the plane.

No, Germans hate their fellow kin.

It's appreciated, but be aware that they will probably respond to you in English. (It's not like the French, who will scoff at poor attempts at the language.)
