The previous answers pointed out, you were not specific in what you are expecting to do with your GED.

1. if you wish to WORK in Europe, you might have a problem. The regulations do not specifically say so, but here is the answer from a large company to my daughter (after she did a successful internship there): We will be able to obtain a German work permit for an American ONLY if he or she is at least as qualified as an applicant from the UK or Ireland.. (Mildly put, your chances with a GED against an Irish High School diploma are not good.)

2. the GED is treated in Germany as a German High-School Diploma minus 3 years (this per advice from the Ministry of Education in Duesseldorf). Translation, if you cannot test out of most requirements, then it will be another 3 years in school before they would even allow you to apply at a German "College"/ University.

3. There is a distressing number of German university graduates still unemployed one year after graduation.

4. There is also a large percentage, especially of young German women, who are conversant in German, English, French and Spanish.

5. All of the above boils down to a single question:
In what areas and with what qualifications do you expect to "best" your German "competitors"?

@aussie_ozs: Right-Oh VERY good point!
Works both ways, we have a niece who spent a year in the US. She did not yet have a German degree, Rutgers enrolled her in a doctoral program. Our daughter spent her junior year at Valencia, fully enrolled.

A chance for doing what? Please, be more specific!

If you want to work in germany you need a work permit. That won't be easy to get as I assume - a GED won't help you.
If you want to go to university I'm not sure but think you can apply with a GED. You may have to proof your proficiency in german language by taking a test. More information you will get on the universities' web sites.

Heinz H gave you a very good answer! But if you wish to go to a german university, there's another way: Get enrolled with an american college studying german, and then try to participate in an exchange program - this will grant you access to a german university. I know many students from USA and Canada who stayed longer than that 1 exchange year ;-)

Lady Jasmin
you'll have a problem.Not only will you need a work permit also schooling.
I'm orig. from Germany and you just about have to have college to get a decent job

Doing what? Do you speak fluent German? Do you have a work permit? In humble opinion, things are not looking to good for you. Have you ever seen statistics on how far the USA lacks behind other counties education? You may be able to work for the US military there, but not for the germans. GOOD LUCK!

lederbikergene
depends on what you want to do with it...but not really. Germans usually insist on proper credentials and references for jobs or admission to colleges & universities. A GED wouldn´t be recognized.
