I am German, living in Germany, and all I can tell you is this: Germans wear their wedding rings as engagement rings first on their right finger. As soon as they are married, they put the ring on the other hand. And if the spouse dies, his/her ring will be worn additionally on the same finger of the left hand. Although this latter custom is not followed by everyone nowadays, I still think it is a nice way of showing how much you care...
