Sure we do.

In cities, there is usually public transport that's convenient enough (depends on the size of the city, but Berlin, e.g., is excellent in public transport), and we walk the rest of the distance to our destination instead of using our cars. There are three reasons: horrendous gas prices, lack of parking space, and the inconvenience of driving in a crowded city center.

Germans are great walkers; they even do it voluntarily on weekends. We call it "Wandern", which could roughly be translated as "hiking". Also, there's the tradition of the "Sonntagsspaziergang" ("sunday walk") in many families: No matter how the weather is, mom and dad will pack themselves in rainproof clothing and go for a walk with their children (and the dog) around the neighborhood. (Must I say how much I hated that as a child?)

Germans believe that fresh (and most of the year that means COLD air) is good for you.

Well, I'm German. And I just... DON'T.

The Germans are great walkers. It's very common that they take after dinner walks. Also they have weekend/holiday "Volks Marches" which are not competitive but set up to get people out as a group. They give medals and such.
Various cities have great walking areas, old towns, parks, etc.
Munich, Heidelburg, Berlin, the mountain towns/villages are wonderful.
Don't miss Bertchesgaden near Austrian border.

The distances in the cities are not the same as in a US city and it's easy to walk around to places. It's kind of like NYC, in a way. But *much* safer than NYC.... ;-)
