Oh yes they do and they are so kind people. I really was a shame that even I wasn't that good in English like they were.

No, nobody and certainly not me ;-)

Seriously, almost everybody had it in school and most people can at least understand it. They might feel a little uncertain when they have to speak it but they will try.

Now, come over and see for yourself!

The younger people mostly speak at least a little English and enjoy "practicing" it with English speaking visitors. I lived in Germany for 3 years and tried to learn a little German but every time I tried to use it, they would answer me in English! I found the Germans to be very polite and I enjoyed my stay while I was there.

Ladybird
Alot of people do, yes. Obviously it depends on where you go, you will find more English speaking people in the big cities There are some people that can't but not many really.

Same as any other non english speaking country - some people have learnt it and some haven't...

Some yes, some no. Younger generation probably speak better than you do:)

In old e.Germany, the older generation only learnt Russian at school. English was for capitalists.

meee
yup. the younger people mainly do because they learn it in school. most older people know enough to help you and have a convo. i would say you could go knowing no german but i would advise learning a little. :D
