I haven't heard of anyone playing the game over here, but Beetle is an exact translation of Käfer/Kaefer, it's a bug in both languages, and it got its name because it looked like one to the German designer, too. |

The phrase "slug bug" wouldn't make much sense in Germany, not only because it's a uniquely American phenomenon (not even a common one), but because Germans don't even call those cars Beetles, let alone "bugs" (some do refer to the New Beetle as the "New Beetle", though). The original German name for that car is "Kafer", with an umlaut over the 'a'--in Anglicized spelling it would be "Kaefer". When the car was marketed in the U.S., the name was changed both because the car resembled a beetle in appearance... and because a name like "Kaefer" wouldn't be as likely to attract interest from American consumers. The same goes for the Volkswagen Rabbit; it was never called "Rabbit" in Germany. That car always has been and is still called the Golf. |

Not really, but I've heard of games similar like that, usually in books that tell parents how to raise their children, section : how to keep children occupied on long trips. |

I play slug bug and I live in Berlin. I also play 'wave to the UPS man' (hit someone if you see a UPS truck, but if the hit person can get the driver to wave back to him he gets to hit the other person back 5 times). Also I was playing Yahtzee with some German friends and they kept getting Yahtzee's so we started calling it Nazi Yahtzee. Very classy! |

I've never met a German that played it, and I've live in Germany for over 15 years.
Of course, I don't know many American kids that play it, either. |
