Well, I feel like the east of germany is pretty underrepresented here.
Of course, Berlin (and nearby Potsdam!) is a must-see, but there are other cities and towns here which top most of the west german cities (saying this as a western german btw):
Dresden of course, which has arguably the most beautiful quarter in whole germany and a vibrant young scene in the so called (also beautiful) Neustadt. It's also not as expensive as for example munich.
And also Leipzig is a very pretty city despite the high unemployment rate. But that's the reason it is really cheap here and because of this there are many young artists and students with a great creativity!
Erfurt is also one of my favourites with the beautiful old town and the churches dominating the city.
Small jewels which are real must-sees are Görlitz at the polish border and Quedlinburg, as they give you the feeling to be really in a time centuries ago! And of course Weimar, where Goethe once lived!
And to the north, to the eastern/baltic sea there are Schwerin, Wismar and Stralsund, arguably the most impressive sights along the shore.
My top list of the big cities (over 400.000 citizens) of Germany is like this:
Berlin
Hamburg
Dresden
Leipzig
Cologne (it's not pretty but full of life and great to shop)
Frankfurt
Munich
Bremen
And of the cities from 100.000 to 400.000 i would visit
Freiburg
Lübeck
Erfurt
Potsdam
Heidelberg
Regensburg
The smaller ones include:
Quedlinburg
Weimar
Görlitz
Wismar
Bamberg
Rothenburg o.d. Tauber
Marburg
Celle |

We went to Bavaria, Germany's southeastern most state, last June. We rented a motor home in Munich, and went castle hopping. We saw Neuschwanstien and Hohenschwangau, very close to each other, and Linderhof, near Garmisch. Look them up on the search engine. Also, don't miss Herren Chiemsee, Berchtesgaden, and just 14 km from there is Salzburg, Austria. So much to take in all at once!!! We enjoyed it so much, we are going back again this year. |

Berlin and Potsdam,
The Rhine and Mosel valleys, Trier
Munich, Regensburg and Neuschwanstein castle. This short list is just the tip of the iceberg. |

ARRGH!!!

Hamburg (the pearl of the north)
Rothenburg ob der Tauber (only intact medieval town)
Quedlinburg
Aachen
Köln
and only as a last resort: Berlin (because it's the capital) |

The city of Heidelberg is a wonderful place for tourists. The city has several to offer such as a beautiful castle that offers a picturesque view of Heidelberg, several museums, a zoo, numerous clubs, the oldest university in Germany, a philosopher's walk (that offers another wonderful view of Heidelberg), great statues, warm and friendly people (many of them speak English). Also, Heidelberg is reputed to be a romantic city, which I agree. There is a famous saying, "I lost my heart in Heidelberg." It is a fairly large city though many people consider it to be small. Since it is a university city, there a lot of pubs and cafes to hang out with students if you want to. There are so many good restaurants here that I don't know where to begin!
There is
Another city that I like it's called Wangen. I only stayed for there for four days for Christmas. However, I feel in love with Wangen because it was so beautiful there! It is quite small but a friendly town. Beautiful buildings and the city also had interesting statues to look at of which most of the time offered a tale to tell. Wangen is about a half hour drive from the moutains. It was so beautiful that it took my breath away (the view from the mountains). There are several very small towns surrounding Wangen that are very interesting to explore.
Other cities that I would recommend are (I never been there though):
Berlin
Frankfurt
Munich
Regensberg
Here is a wonderful guide book that has very nice pictures and sometimes maps. It also offers a brief history, practical information, a small phrasebook of Germany. It is called, "Eyewitness Travel Guides." Have fun! There are tons of beautiful cities in Germany! |

There certainly is no lack of places to visit - many of which already mentioned - the Castles, but there are many others with much more history than the ones in Bavaria. Garmisch if you like mountains, Hamburg if you like the sea, Kiel if you are into sailing, Berlin just for History, Frankfurt is cool and metropolitan, Munich is traditional and festive (great people, very tourist friendly), Berchtesgaden and the Koenigssee (King's lake), the Black Forrest and many more. How much time do you have? |

I just returned. I went over Christmas and saw Berlin and Frankfurt. It makes me want to go back! I was very Impressed...
These two cities are very different from each other, and the history and sights to see in Berlin is Spectacular! I met lots of nice people that told me much about Hamberg, and Cologne....
If you go to Berlin you will get quite an education about everything from the Nazi regime to the Kaiser's rule, dating back hundreds of years......The Berlin Wall was really something to see. They have a small piece of it still up as a reminder and a monument. Same thing with some of the bombed sights from WW ll
I had a great time and was real impressed with the people.....I have traveled in Europe to France, Holland, Belgium, Italy, the U.K. (which I dearly love). But Germany was the BEST....... |

Munich is fantastic (beautiful city, very friendly people, great food of course). In my opinion the best German city to visit as a tourist. But, Berlin is very cool too but in a different way. |
