Does anyone have any tips before going on an exchange to germany?

I'm sixteen and I finally got confirmations that I am going to Germany for an exchange over the summer. I'm staying with a family in a small town near Munich, Germany.

So what I was wondering is if anyone had any tips or tricks, etc. for doing an exchange in Germany and living there.

Like what should I wear? (I'm going in the summer)
What kind of hostess gift should i bring?
Any useful phrases?
What are German guys like, and what do they like in girls?
So basically anything you think might be useful for a sixteen year old going to a country by herself during the summer.

Thanks bunches :)

Chasing Shadows at Midnight
Actually, on the contrary of what the second person wrote, Munich is a terribly safe city. There is no need to worry or anything like that. I guess you should watch out for drunks, but it's typically very safe and you should be just fine.

The clothing varies, especially during the summer. Though they tend to dress with more class in some places with more dull colors, they dress with bright colors and crazy hairstyles in others.

They do appreciate anything, because it's the thought that counts. But I actually gave maple syrup to my neighbors and they loved it. Basically just what ever you find appropriate.

If you didn't know, they use tschüss (meaning goodbye) in the south. Knowing German, I'm sure you knew that already.

Well the older Germans can seem a bit stand-offish, but the teens are quite accepting (the guys more so than the girls). Just introduce yourself and it will go from there.

I live about 20 minutes from the main station in Munich. So email me if you have any other questions. :]

Good luck. Be safe. And have fun!

Don't worry too much about clothing as everyone is very free to wear what he/she likes. Munich is also very international in the summer as there are lots of tourists. Just make sure to bring some warmer clothes for colder weather as well as summers in Munich can be a bit chilly as well.

I would advise to bring some (traditional) gift from the USA like some special food which you cannot buy in Europe.

Useful phrases: please follow some of the language courses on babbel.com. You might also meet nice people there.

I wish you a happy holiday!
