I think ypu properly mean HOW to write them using Word etc in WINDOWS, right?

Press and HOLD the [ALT] key, use the Number pad to the left (it does not work using the numbers above) and type in the ACSII code assosiated with the Umlaut. Then let go of the [ALT] Key.

This DOES NOT WORK in NOTEPAD
Umlaut/ ACSSI
Ä 0196
Ö 0214
Ü 0220
ä 0228
ë 0235
ö 0246
ü 0252

ä=ALT 132
ë=ALT 137
ï=ALT 139
ü=ALT 129
ß=ALT 225

In Windows, simply press the ALT-Button, and while keeping it pressed type one of the following codes on your Num-Pad (works only with Num-Pad, not with the numbers above qwerty....):

Ä = 0196
ä = 0228
Ö = 0214
ö = 0246
Ü = 0220
ü = 0252
ß = 0223

After typing one of the Codes, release ALT, and the letter will be written.
In Windows you also have the chance to activate the german keyboard-layout. Therefor go to:
- START
- Settings
- System"stuff"(what's it in english again?! ^^)
- (When XP, change to the classic view...)
- Region and Languagesettings
- Languages
- Details

There you can add the german keyboard-layout.
Switch to it! Now you can use öäüß with ; ' [ - (+caps for the capital-types...).

Hi there, if u don't have german keyboard then i think you can inset umlaut & esszet from insert symbol. if u dont find in insert then u can write ä=ae, ö=oe, ü=ue & ß=ss. It is accepted nowadays.

Anaïs
On a Mac keyboard:

option + "u" + vowel = ä ë ö ü
option + "s" = ß

on your Computer must be a 'character map' . there you can find all the characters you might need. such as "©ä€‰®¿öü¾" and many more

My cat Jake owns me
Copy and paste mine, plus I´ve added others from a German keyboard for your use:

äöü

€ µ ³ ß

katyfleece
öäüß

Do you mean these?
