yeah, the program you have

We use to sing the English text (and melody), but replace "dear [Tommy]" by "lieber [Tommy]" and "dear [Mary]" by "liebe [Mary]"

This has the same melody, is funny and mostly kids like it:
"Happy birthday to you, Marmelade im Schuh,
Aprikosen in den Hosen, Happy birthday to you"
(Jam in the shoes, apricots in the trousers)

Or you can sing this (different melody)
"Viel Glück und viel Segen, auf all deinen Wegen,
Gesundheit und Frohsinn sei auch mit dabei"
(Good luck and many blessings, on all your ways,
health and happiness should also be included)

type and translate... this should work.

good luck.

Very funny, mattbaldwin. As you might have guessed, this is no faithful translation, but rather makes fun of the birthday boy / girl.

Actually, while there is a German translation ("Zum Geburtstag viel Glück, zum Geburtstag viel Glück, alles Liebe, alles Gute, zum Geburtstag viel Glück") it is usually sung in English -- yes, even in Germany.

There is another cute birthday song which goes like:

Heute kann es regnen, stürmen oder schneien,
denn du strahlst ja selber wie der Sonnenschein.
Heut ist dein Geburtstag, darum feiern wir.
Wie schön dass du geboren bist, wir hätten dich sonst sehr vermisst. Wie schön dass wir beisammen sind, wir gratulieren dir, Geburtstagskind!:)

But Happy Birthday is really what is sung even though it's not in German.

You can use the melody of "Happy Birthday" and then sing the following words:

Zum Geburtstag viel Glück,
zum Geburtstag viel Glück,
Zum Geburtstag alles Gute,
Zum Geburtstag viel Glück!

I'll write it phonetically for you:

"tsum geboortstak feel glyck
tsum geboortstak feel glyck
tsum geboortstak alless goota
tsum geboortstak feel glyck"

Have fun!
