I live in Germany (I'm American). I live in Wiesbaden and can tell you from experience that most cities along the Rhein river are awesome for touring. Rudesheim, Bingen, Eltville, Mainz, Wiesbaden, etc ...

Now, I've personally traveled to Trier, Koln (Cologne), Nurnberg, Bamberg, Wurzburg, Heidelberg, and a few other places, but none are quite as beautiful as the Rhein areas. Also, Trier is a great city and a MUST SEE while in Germany. It has so much history there ... the Porta Nigra, Constantine's Cathedral, Jesus Christ's Robe (the one he was crucified in).. etc ... it's an awesome city too.

Enjoy Germany ... it's AWESOME!!!!!!!

Once the World Cup madness is over you should definitely go to Berlin. I know it's quite a treck, but it is an amazing city with heaps of history, great culture, it's very cheap and it's the capital. Definitely a must-see!

Agree with the Rhein River, especially as soon as it warms up. See the Rhein Aflame in the summer.

You also should visit Berlin for the history; Rothenburg ob Tauber, the walled city; Heidelberg with the castle above town and the oldest university in Germany; the cathedral in Koeln; the Dom (cathedral) in Worms and Speyer. Go to Dresden over Thanksgiving to see the oldest Christmas market and the restored cathedral. Visit Seifen in the mountains between Germany and Czech - visit the shops where nutcrackers and other wooden items are made. Go to an Easter market next spring. Help pick grapes in a vinyard. Travel to Munich, but not during Oktoberfest if you don't like crowds. See the three castles of Mad King Ludwig.

Hit the Birkenstock outlet on the Rhein, near Bonn, for reasonable shoes. Find one of the Vileroy and Boch outlets.

since you live there you will have much time to travel and see a lot. i used to live in the north, kiel to be exact. there is a week long sailing event the last week on june http://www.kieler-woche.de/eng/englishdefault.htm . it is the second biggest party in germany. also Rothenburg is a beautiful medieval town, if you like that. hopes this helps, enjoy your stay in germany... tschoe mit oe

As a German native, I agree with some of the above, especially Berlin, Cologne and places along the Rhine. If you like castles, wine and old, romantic towns, the latter is the place to be.

If you'd like to try some less obvious, less touristy places and like the sea, travel up north! For some reason only the south is "promoted" for foreigners coming to Germany, up north along the shores and on the islands, you hardly see anyone from another country. Check out the Frisian islands and the island of Sylt.
