Does germany annually celebrate the day the berlin wall came down?

The wall came down on Nov. 9th 1989; but since the day of the political and legal reunification of Germany (Oct. 3rd 1990) has been chosen as national holiday instead, that's the day the official celebrations take place. Nov. 9th is a normal working day, and "celebrations" are mostly limited to TV stations saving money by showing endless re-runs of news-reels from 1989....

No, why should we? It's just another day off - and that's it.

Yes and No. On October 3rd we have our National Day -Tag der Deutschen Einheit- (Day of German Reunification). There are some festivitates mostly politicans take part of it and tell us how great they are and celebrate themselves.

Most people in west germany think it was a big mistake that the wall is gone. nobody really celebrates it but everybody is off work that day.

ShlomoNYC
Nope they do not.The reason is very simple - November 9th is an important day in German history:

Novembe 9th 1918 the German Republic was "founded" - the Kaiser moved to the Netherlands

November 9th 1938 Jewish Synagogues and shops were destroyed in Germany

So obviously they could not declare that day a national holiday - so they chose October 3rd.
