In German schools, the first foreign language is English. But, many people have no practise and are too shy to speak it.
Even over 60 years old people speak English (smile). My mom spoke it perfect, and she would now be 90.
Generally, Germans treat people like they are treated, so usually you will get an answer if you ask politely. I'm sorry for the lady with the bad experience, perhaps someone had a bad day, but there are bad behaving people all over the world.
You will see, that even many shops have English names etc., you will be able to buy maps and read street names .. (not like going to Japan *g*)
Have fun! |

Yes, most Germans (not Germany) speak more than one language and most speak English. All the European countries do with the exception of the French, even if most of the people do speak English, many will not let you know it. I hope this helps. |

You will need to attempt their language first and then they will speak english to you....
Make your german sound worse than they perceive their english to be and they will speak to you in english and be helpful. |

Depends on where you go. Munich and Berlin you should have no problems, But Northern areas like Hamburg could be dicey. I actually had people tunr around and walk away from me in Hamburg when I asked them if they spoke English.
You ahould buy a phrase book to at least be able to initiate a conversation and ask simple things. |
