Finns speak English amazingly well!?

I have met a few Finns (teenagers 20 years old) yesterday on a conference here in Dublin (which is in Ireland). I am Russian-Irish and I was amazed by how well Finns spoke English. They had perfectly English pronunciation. If Finnish say "good", then they would say that in the proper English way, not like other Romanians, Russians, Indians do (pronunciation is not English at ALL). When I came to Ireland I spoke 0 English that was 6 years ago, yet these guys form Finland arrived already fluent in English, and not only that, they also had perfect English speech. Does anyone know how come Finns are so good at English? May be there are some Finns over there who might shine the light on this issue.
In Russian primary & secondary schools were were taught by Russians who studied English as their second language. They taught us no English whatsoever. May be in Finnish schools Finns have proper teachers directly form England. Then that would be a good explanation.

As a person living in Finland, I can tell that there are of course Finns who pronounce English well, quite well, rather badly and badly. I wouldn't say that Finns pronounce English so much better than people from other countries. There are not so many native English teachers in schools, but there are undubbed English tv-programmes, so maybe that's why it's on average a bit better.

This is the German forum ;-)
Well, one reason may be that in Finland (just as in Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Denmark, The Netherlands...) movies and tv series are shown in the original language with subtitles, so the people over there kind of grow up with English. If you hear the language every day, you just pick it up much more easy than in school.

Yes, tv probably plays a big part, but if Finland is anything like Germany (I don't know their education system, but I'm betting it is) then they are probably required to learn it for many years in school. The school that I briefly attended in Germany (Koeln- or Cologne) mandated that children started learning English at age 11 and have it every year while in school.

I agree with sundance.
I also think it has to do with the TV, in Germany English movies are dubbed in Finnland they are shwon in English same in Netherlands,Denmark,Sweden,Norway and Iceland.
I guess watching TV in English almost every day is the reason the people from all these countries speak English so good.
