Not really, that tradition is rather common in France.
In Germany, especially in Bavaria, you normally only do that kind of thing with (female) family members or (female) friends. I ve spent about half of my life in Germany and I ve never seen any guys doing that.
So in general, when you meet a girl for the very first time, you wouldn t do that.

@Amy Beware:
If your mom really was German, you should know that you misspelt all the words there, it s:

Bier
Oktoberfest
Lederhosen
Bratwurst
Sauerkraut
Wiener Schnitzel
Volkswagen
.....

Fabian
The German culture is to shake hands when saying "Hello" and "Goodbye". Kisses while saying this, are not German. They are "imported" from countries in Southern Europe.

sometimes..its different in every city... in my town its normal taht the girl kiss her friends ( just girls) on the mouth to say hello and good bye.
But girls just hug boys to say hello or good bye.
They never kiss the friend when they are boys on the cheek.
Im from Germany so I know that.. and I was reallly confused when I was in Uk with my english friends in the pub and when I say goodbye they all kissed me on the cheek and that was really strange... *lol*

Nope, not that I`ve ever seen, maybe if they are GOOD friends, then it`s okay. If you do it they will probably think it`s an american thing...lol

It is not really a culture but to say goodbye to your boyfriend/girlfriend, mom, dad, grandparents you often give them a short kiss on a cheek.

The habit of kissing the right and left cheek of nearly everybody is commen in france!..
Some youngsters like to do that in Germany too, but it is not commen...

It is not actually german, but we do it. It came from France, but we took it on.

Yeah, sometimes if they are real close or family

BITE ME
I think it is a European thing in general. Good friends of ours are half Italian and half German. Once he felt that we were close enough in friendship, he kisses me once on each cheek while holding my right hand upon arrival and then departing.

** Chris: yes, you put the correct spelling, BUT the other person was putting the phonetic spelling....**

yes it is !!

yes it seems so..cause i live in germany now and its 2 kisses on the left cheek and right one..friend or girlfriend or meeting someone for the first time...it seems normal....and guys do it too!!!!

Amy Beware
I don't think so. Most Europeans kiss both cheeks of girls and guys. I think it's the kiss on the hand when introduced to a girl or when saying goodbye.
German culture includes;
Beer- {October fest}
Laterhosen- Short leather pants
Bratworst- Fried sausage
Sour kroutt-Cabbage
Viener schnittzel- Veal
Folkswagon- Cars built for "the people"
