You're welcome to my home town, Furth im Wald in Bavaria. Take the Wikipedia entry as a starter. Close to the Czech Republic, Furth im Wald has a history of living near the "iron curtain", and maybe you can learn about the times that were called the "cold war" from there. They have a folk's festival every year called the Drachenstich (the slaying of the dragon) repeating the history of a border town in a metaphorical way. I just found out that the English Wikipdia doesn't (yet) have an entry for that, but the German version offers plenty of information:

If you need more, or some personal impressions, mail or call me. |

Trier Germany. Located near the German Border with Luxembourg. It was the Roman Capital of Germany. Trier has the best preserved Roman ruins in Europe.
The town hall was built by the Romans and is still in use as a city hall today. The Black Gate with it's guard towers still stand and you can go up in them. The Colosseum still stands with it's quarters for animals and gladiators under the floor of the Colosseum. The Roman Guard Barracks are still partially intact. The Roman bath houses are still intact.
When you walk around town, you will see Roman ruins that people have built onto and made them part of their houses, gardens, etc.
There are also two gothic churches with gargoyles on the spires and statutes carved into the exterior walls. |

Passau. Small university town in Bavaria right next to the Czech and Austrian borders. Starting point for cruises down the Danube to Vienna and Budapest, so it always gets lots of elderly Japanese and American tourists. Young Europeans visit it because they use it as starting point for the Danube Cycling Trail. (Read about cycling this trail here: http://www.boblucky.com/Biking/Danube/Intro.htm )
Passau is most famous for its joining of the rivers Ilz, Inn and Danube at the same point, which is why the city is called "Three-River-City". Many tourists go on a short "three-river-cruise". Passau has been settled since Roman times and a nice historic old town. There is a big cathedral dating from the 17th century, it is very beautiful decorated in the baroque style and has a world-famous organ. Organ concerts are held everyday throughout the summer. On the other side across the Danube from the Old City there is an old fortress, the Veste Oberhaus. Part of it is now a museum while another part serves as HI/YHA Youth Hostel.

Your descriptions sounds as if you were looking for "Münster"
http://www.muenster.de/en/
280.000 inhabitants
next to the netherlands in the northwestern part of germany
very beautiful historical city center (rebuild after war)
student city (one of germanys largerst universities with about 50.000 students)
And the best reason: Its not a bavarian city. As most americans thinks that bavaria = germany, you can tell them that its not true
just check out the website or wikipedia |
