1. Yes indeed.
2. Yes you can, he would be from Hamburg or Flensburg and the surrounding areas.
3. Basically, yes. It's interchangeable, but most people just use "Moin".
4. Yes, you can. People in the south might think you are crazy when you say it in the afternoon. There are people who think that it just means good morning (it doesn't, you can say it all day). But "Moin" will make you very popular in the north :)

It should be around Hamburg,
moin moin is the same as moin.
You can, but it's weird. Use polite language, Only when people say it to you first. But they will begin to talk with diarect. Then you will have big trouble.

1) Yes. It's a short form of "(Guten) Morgen" ("(good) morning") which is used all day. It's quite informal though.
2) Not really. You can just guess that the person is from the northwest. And that region does not just consist of two or three cities.
3) Yes.
4) Basically yes. But the further you travel south, the more you should use "Guten Tag" when you want to be polite/formal.

1. Yes. I'm from the northern part of lower saxony and I even get emails from the city council starting with "Moin"...
3. Moin is more widely used. Moin Moin is common in East Frisia
(northwestern lower saxony).
4. Yes, but never forget it's a colloquial term.

1) Yes, they do, but they also say Guten Tag on more formal occasions.

2) No, because Moin has spread in Germany.

3) yes

4) yes. But it is more polite to say Guten Tag.

Biedronka
I am from Berlin and have never heard anyone saying moin ever and I have been here for 3 years! Moin or moin-moin is popular in Saarland, Luxembourg maybe in parts of the Rhein, but north?
In Berlin people say einfach hallo or tag (with soft g, not hard g)

Saying guten tag is fine, but it is better to listen to how people greet each other eg: when getting into a bus.

Btw - the more south you go, the more you will hear gruß Gott, not guten tag.
Listen to Goofie - if you start in dialect you really won't understand what people are saying.

1) Yes, Germans in the North are more likely to say "Moin".
2) No... Hamburg
3) Usually it's "Moin, Moin"... not just once!
4) No, you can say "Guten Tag" all day long (since it means "good day")... "moin, moin" on the other hand should only be used in the morning.
