I am German, living in Bavaria, and born Bavarian. I understand Bavarian, and Austrian perfectly. But I don't understand Swiss German when a Swiss speaks it.
To your questions:
Q.1: Has been answered.
Q.2: No, if he uses dialect. But yes, if he uses some standard German, mixed with some dialect
Q:3: False. Berliners also speak a dialect that's called "Berlinerisch". Berlin dialect is NOT standard German. There actually is no dialect that's really "standard German", just like there is no "standard English"
Q.4: "Höfling" is a German name, yes. It means a "peasant" or "farmer". But not every German delves deep into family history, so maybe he won't know what the name means. |

1) hardly or maybe somewhat. if it's written down it's easier.
2) better but probably not all.
3) no, standard german originates from hanover. so, false.
4) it's not common. common would be schmitz, müller, meier. |

1)
I have no problem understanding people from Switzerland.
Actually it's much easier for me than some native dialects.
2)
see above
3)
No. Berlin has a rather strong native dialect.
4)
Not in general. It might be in his local group though. |

1. yes, I understand it
2. yes
3. standard German is spoken in the Hannover area, not in Berlin
4. Hoefling is a typical sout German name. As a name not too common. Common names would be Mueller, Maier/meier/Meyer |

A.1) Usually not.
A.2) Maybe, but depends on personal language skills
A.3) False (but do not generalize). Hanover is known as the city, where standard german is spoken at its best. But berlins dialect is not very difficult. Just a different pronunciation
A.4) No, i never heard it. Sounds bavarian...deeep bavarian |

Yes some words. It's sounds very funny, but I was in Swiss more than a year, and learn very quickly this dialect. |

I am not German, but I have lived in Germany for over 20 years.
1) I think the swiss talk like coffee beans being grinded in a hand held grinder.
2) A lot of "Germans" have different dialects. Most Germans would understand a swiss. Maybe not, at least, the southern Germans would. Austrians have strong dialects too. I think people who speak "plattdeutsch" might have difficulty understanding dialects. Some people believe "plattdeutsch" is high German or correct German. I think it is more uppish.
3) Nope . . . Please the Berlin people. Some are Ossis. They have a dialect of their own. Everyone has to learn "Deutsche Rechtschrift", but I don't think the Berliners have a monopoly on the German language.
4) Nah, I don't think so. Schmidt is. Miller is. |
